Struggling to compete with its Windows smartphone offerings, Nokia is making a bid to grab the potential market for secondary, budget-priced feature phones. The

Nokia 105 only made calls and sent texts, but the 206 includes web access (sort of), an app store and a camera. But does it offer enough, cheaply enough, to make it worth your while?

It's available now for around £50.

The casing is standard glossy plastic on the front with a rubberised effect on the back and it comes in five colours: black, white, cyan, magenta and yellow.

The colour 2.4-inch screen offers an unimpressive resolution of 320x240 pixels and sits above a standard numerical keypad, with a five-way D-pad for navigating your way around the menus.

Software and performance

It's running Symbian Series 40 operating system, which is basic but reasonably straightforward, with functions laid out in an iPhone-like grid system on a single scrolling page. Unlike the ultra-basic 105 you can use the 206 to manage your social networking, though the small screen means it's not as versatile as the average smartphone. It comes with Facebook, Twitter and eBuddy (for chat) already preloaded and you can add more apps from Nokia's app store. Don't expect a huge amount to choose from, though there are a few half-decent games, including Bejeweled, Need For Speed Shift and Medal of Honor.

You can browse the web using the Nokia Xpress browser. You can, but it's a painfully slow experience, and you'll want to make sure you have a decent data allowance since you can't connect via Wi-Fi.

The low-res screen also means pages are often difficult to read.

Useful in emergencies, but you're unlikely to be browsing for fun.

Photography

The abilities of the 1.3-megapixel camera are necessarily limited and it comes with no frills. You can adjust the white balance but that's about it, and there's no autofocus or flash. Once you have your pics, there's no USB connection to download them to your computer, you'll need to use Bluetooth if you want to share them.

Pic quality is pretty poor too, with a lot of noise and a bizarre tendency to smear around the edges.

You can add songs for playback, though there's only 32MB of memory on board -- you'll need to add a microSD card up to 32GB. Or you can listen to the FM radio, using the supplied bog-standard headphones as an aerial.

The battery stood up very well, and after a day of regular use the power indicator had barely begun to drop from full.

Conclusion

The Nokia 206 is a solidly-built basic phone that's easy on the pocket as well as the budget. It's main appeal is that it's simple and easy to use, which it certainly is, but for only a few quid more you could pick up a budget smartphone with much greater capabilities, and probably better performance. So unlike the 105, with its ridiculously cheap £15 price, it's not quite clear who would really want to bother with it.
